To add to the sea theme I've added a glass jellyfish seeming to float inside the solid glass handle, with a cap of blue, and tentacles of white with hints of yellow and blue. Along the lower end I've 'fumed' pure silver onto a rich transparent sapphire blue glass to produce lovely tones of creams and milky metallic opal blues, producing a wonderful effect reminiscent of waves on water with a metallic sheen. Over this I've then layered clear glass to lock the silver in. They will change depending on the background, with the colours more intense on dark backgrounds. When held up to the light you get a different effect again with yellows from the silver from the glass! When the shine light on it the silver lusters really catch the light as it moves, the photos really don't do the effects justice. The glass is quite light too, and according to my jewellery scales only weights 37 grams (about 1.31 oz).
The pen, not including the nib, is around 192mm long (about 7 5/8 inches.) It is supplied with the nib as shown in the picture, as well as a certificate, hand signed by me, stating that this is a handmade glass item made by me, and a white presentation box with my logo on it. You can also add a pack of 5 nibs to experiment with. This includes an itallics roundhand No.4, crown copperplate, two drawing nibs (general and 256 school nib) plus a blue shorthandnib, also called a pumpkin nib. These are all brand new genuine Leonardt nibs.
The mechanism can be removed for cleaning, and comes with a nib which can easily be swapped out to suit your own nibs. Most art and craft stores stock these nibs for everything from fine drawing to bold writing. Just dip the nib into calligraphy ink (fountain ink it too thin and not ideal) and start your masterpiece! The tube it fits into is rounded on top so not to leave a sharp edge too.
I’ve made this pen by melting and manipulating borosilicate glass (‘Pyrex’ is the well known brand name of this type of glass) directly in the flame to have maximum control over the glass. Every one that I make is unique in both the colours I use and the shape! There may be some slight surface imperfections, and internal bubbles, as this is entirely hand formed glass.
The glass has been fully annealed in microprocessor controlled kiln to improve toughness, but it is still glass and should not be thrown around! Every pen I make is always slightly different, so is always a true one of a kind piece of artisan flamework made entirely by hand by lampwork in my studio in the heart of the English countryside.
